This is also a painful commute, unfortunately. It's an hour by transit from most parts of Albany to most parts of Alameda, whether by BART or by bus (which is actually sometimes faster depending on where you're going). Albany also has no particular pros over Alameda or Oakland if OP doesn't need schools--it's generally more expensive. El Cerrito's a bit cheaper but the commute is even longer. The main reason to live there with an Alameda commute if you don't need schools or a family-oriented community is because you have a partner going the other direction, IMO.

OP, it would help to know both your budget and which end of Alameda your job is on--it makes a bigger difference than you'd think given the traffic.

BART to Alameda is pretty crappy. Since you still need to take a bus. If I were to take BART to Alameda from North Oakland, it would be a 5-12 minute ride to 12th or Fruitvale and the bus ride is 15-20 minutes. You'd likely have a bit of walking too.

Planning to take BART to Alameda isn't a good idea unless it is a last resort.
