Greetings,

I"m afraid to find out the answer to this question . Spouse and I are considering a one year visiting professor opportunity in the SF Bay area (Stanford, precisely).

We can live small - but wondering what $$$range might we be looking at for a 1 bedroom that doesn't include commute from hell. Stanford has subsidized housing for faculty, but we're still interested in exploring options.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Go for the subsidized faculty housing. It exists for a reason. Make life easy on yourselves. The less time spent getting to work, the more time available to enjoy life and your surroundings.

You can get a corporate type 1 bedroom apartment at places like Avalon Eaves in Mountain View starting at around 2500/month.

As someone that used to work at Stanford, I highly, highly suggest you take the subsidized housing. You won't find any deal like it anywhere near. By "anywhere near", I mean within 1.5 - 2 hours.

Agree. If you were just determined to check out your options, you could look for rentals along the Caltrain route. Looks like you could get a free rider's pass.

Definitely explore any housing options from the university - it's not only easier on the wallet, but you're right there, too. I spent a couple of years growing up in Escondido Village when my dad was working on his doctorate and loved it.
