Well let's put it like this, crime in Oakland has plunged from its 1992 high of 165 homicides, and that's a good thing, however it's still the most dangerous major city in the western United States, despite being in the most prosperous region in the country. While some neighborhoods in Oakland are certainly better than they used to be, other remain just as impoverished, and crime ridden as they've always been. Downtown, Temescal, Longfellow, Bushrod, Gaskill, and large portions of West Oakland have noticeably improved, but once you get past 40th avenue, there's no difference between now and the 80s.

That's just it tho. Oakland, being in the heart of the Bay Area, doesnt suffer from the hopelessness of a depressed rust belt town or even the near total grit of Compton, on the contrary Oakland has grit in many areas but is also quite refined in many other parts of town, and that goes back several generations in many areas like Claremont and Rockridge.

And yet we are seeing a huge group of people moving out, being displaced due to housing costs, or cashing in on their modest homes that are now worth a ton, being replaced by techies, hipsters and affluent housing refugees from SF.

As a result, Oakland is soaring in this ranking as well...

I always find it funny when people say that because it's ****ing near impossible here to actually do that, even if you wanted to. Even here in Vallejo, which has similar history of struggles to Oakland, housing in the secluded, gated areas hovers between 600-800k, which is a bargain for the bay, but outrageous if you look at it from a national perspective.

Gated communities is hyperbole for affluent enclaves that populate areas like Oakland, often times they are policed differently to keep out homeless and less desirable types. Many of these areas are populated by the leading members of those in power who claim to be for the down and out while they ensure to never actually interact with them sans photo ops. This is very common throughout the state.

Though not in oakland but a recent example.

You do realize that Oakland is one of the most racially AND socioeconomically diverse cities in the country, right? Los Angeles is a poor comparison for lots of obvious reasons.

I know it bothers some people, but Oakland has got nicer because middle class folks from SF and other parts of the Bay are heading over- not the mega wealthy/elite (those folks have been here for a long time already). They have absolutely displaced plenty of lower income folks, but not to the extent seen in other places.

The trope of Oakland being this limousine liberal paradise is pretty off. If you don't believe me, just walk the Lake on afternoon where you'll literally see people from all walks of life.

It is just really tiresome to see threads about Oakland and crime rates pop up again, with some usual suspects popping off with some racially and ethnically-tinged insinuations. I thought it was going well for awhile compared with say 5 years ago - and these threads are moderated for just that reason.
