Civil service unions. Hopefully Janus takes care of that.

Silly. There are more than enough ‘street cleaning’ level civil labor projects to keep a thousand times the number of legal employees and all the nation’s convicts busy full time without laying off any union worker. The problem lies in supervisory costs and liabilities.

You are right jbgusa-- Janus was a huge SCOTUS decision and is a very powerful tool for taking union power away from politics- that's why the left wing is so upset about it - once employees realize how the unions are stealing from them and NOT making the country a better place- they will withhold the $$ PLUS it may indeed start encouraging misappropriation of funds criminal charges-- janus will take some time to gain speed, but, the impact is gonna be awesome!! More supreme court decisions coming!! Good point jbgusa!

Union rules have prevented innovative use of people who should work, i.e. prisoners or the chronically unemployed, or want to work, such as high school students after school. We do not maximize value to society by enforcing idleness to protect high-income jobs. See Now fix the welfare system:

Last summer I often parked my car at the Hartsdale train station and walked 1/3 of a mile to play tennis. The grass next to the train station was loaded with garbage and the park on the right side of the Bronx River Parkway next to the tennis courts was only a little better. We're not collecting garbage because we can't "afford to." Why not get some people on welfare to help?

And if necessary, under these conditions provide child care. The courthouse in White Plains has child care available for court employees. Why not expand it a bit?****************There are other projects just as urgently needed. New York needs at least one more water tunnel, so the existing three water tunnels can be shut down seriatim and rebuilt. Again labor costs are prohibitive. Other gold-plating on these projects needs to be removed, but all must participate. These projects must happen and the costs must be made bearable.

Each of these institutions will have to participate, and each will eventually 'write a check.'" There is a sorely missing group of parties here the construction unions, the governmental officials in charge of "poverty" programs and "community organizers.

While Tappan Zee litigation continues relating to "the wage difference between carpenters and dock builders" where "(c)arpenters are paid $70.11 per hour, compared with dock builders that make $92.47 per hour" no consideration is given to a "workfare" program where benefits recipients would apprentice and be paid, say, $22 an hour to learn a trade and $40-$45 per our when working at these trades. The cost numbers of $20 billion to build these tunnels and related train station improvements is eye-popping and ultimately unfeasible. No matter how badly needed nothing is going to get built at those figures.

Janus should bring this gravy train to a screeching halt.

For other thoughts see my post in the Janus thread.
