I am buying a new car from a CA dealership from out of state. My state asks a question on a DMV form to verify the amount of tax paid. They want to know the type of tax paid, i.e., use tax, sales tax, etc. What is it called? I am filling in the PDF form right now for the dealer to sign tomorrow.

Thanks.

It should just be sales tax. Excise tax is something like tax on gasoline. Use tax is tax you should pay on something you bought from out of state, for instance, and use in CA, but didn't pay tax on it. Like when you buy something on Ebay from a guy in Missouri and didn't pay any CA tax on it. You're supposed to include those purchases in your tax return and pay CA tax on them.

I'd just put sales tax on the form, if it was me.

California just has sales tax levied on car sales. They don't have an additional property tax levied on cars annually like in Virginia.
