How come the SF bay color of water looks green in photos, but when I look at it live , it is pretty much grey?

The tidal action of SF bay is responsible for the variety of colors. There is an incredible amount of water that flows in an out of the Golden Gate as well as into the bay from the several rivers that feed it.
The south bay is relatively shallow and the tidal action will churn up the mud on the bottom. Also, when the wind blows against the tidal flow you will get very choppy waves which help agitate the surface.
I've been sailing many times where you will sail from a patch of green to blue or green to gray.
