I love urban hiking around the city and specifically try taking road I haven't been on before.

Some areas I like that (I think) have not been mention above:

* Ashbury Heights
* Forest Hill
* Dogpatch is really fun to wander around these days
* The Vulcan Street steps
* The below hike is a lot of fun

Great urban hike and those views are incredible! I have taken almost that same route before and loved it.

I've also hiked all over the northern slope of Mt. Sutro and the steep surrounding neighborhoods. On a sunny, 65-degree day on that the hill, where it gets a little scrubby and the trail even vanishes from time-to-time, you can work up a nice hill sweat, then venture around to the south side. Here, the wind picks up 500 ft. tall fog banks and pushes them into that small valley below, dropping the temperature 10 degrees within the space of about 200 ft. The aroma is fresh Pacific air and eucalyptus. Simply beautiful.

The lesser known spot is my area East Dublin. People only know West Dublin they have never heard of or been to East Dublin. In East Dublin we have an amazing Target, a Froyo place, we have Sushi restaurants. Not to forget, we have the Outlets!!! What else in the world can be better than the outlets!

Really? that’s how you judge an area, by the target store?
You don’t have the outlet mall, that is Livermore not Dublin. You lived there for a few years and can’t tell what is part of your city?
Your judgement is very suspect.

Shameless plug: the Richmond waterfront. There is the Bay Trail from Richmond to Albany. There is good short hiking at Miller/Knox Regional Park. Lots of stuff in between and nearby as well, most with excellent views of the Bay and San Francisco. The Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park is in this area too and is filled with fascinating Bay Area history. Easy to reach from SF proper via ferry (limited schedule), and not too far from BART and nearby freeways.

Berkeley and Oakland have lots of interesting little pedestrian walkways and stairs connecting the various neighborhoods. It's easy to link them together into a unique itinerary with great vistas and stops along the way. In the Grand Lake area, for example, you can visit Morcom Rose Garden and on a Saturday shop at the big farmers' market across the street from the Grand Lake Theater.

Great topic.
Wow where to begin?

Mt. Diablo has several things going for it.
The summit has one cool view.
Rock City on the mountain has nice hikes.
I dig getting dropped off on the top and coasting my bike to my house.

North Mines road in Livermore is a really nice drive.
I enter in Livermore and exit down south on to by Milpitas.
We do it on a motorcycle or a sportscar.
Nice lunch spot in the middle and the observatory is a nice stop there as well.

Clayton has a bbq contest that closes the Main Street down and it’s always a nice party.

Angel island is cool.
We go on my buddy’s sailboat but they have a ferry that will take you there.
The old Japanese enternment camp there humbles me.

Muir Woods, well what else can I say it’s just awesome .

In the city I have always enjoyed walking around the Sutro Baths/Lands End Area.

Another City thing but not recommended for most is urban walking some of the grittier areas after dark (Ok so I’m kinda weird ).

Those are just off the top of my head but there are way more.

I work in the city and enjoy it.
The grit is part of it.
Tough ***** if you don’t like it.

I work in the city and enjoy it too, ‘Andy’. I was in agreement with you that it was weird to mention a walk in gritty parts of the city after dark as one of your favorite things to do.
