I enjoyed reading that, thanks for posting it! Starting in the mid 50's Pinole and El Sobrante were the chosen destinations of thousands of white Richmond residents who felt threatened by having black and brown people as neighbors, but by the mid 70's white flight extended to Fairfield and Vacaville. I'm not sure where they went after that, Lamorinda maybe?

Great article. San Pablo Avenue. Kind of like the El Camino Real of the East Bay, in a way.

Very much so. There was a privately owned street car service "The Key Line" that ran down San Pablo Avenue, I'm not sure when they stopped service, I think shortly after the end of the war but some of my family members would ride the street car from the town of San Pablo to the Oakland "mole" and then debark and take a Key system ferry to San Francisco.

I used to live in East Bay, I enjoyed the article and acknowledge fondly its charm and history. Unfortunately it's gone to H with all the crime and overpopulation. Every place of business, the armed guards cover the storefronts, the drive-throughs, and even in some communities they've had to assign 24/7 police presence. East Bay was and still would be a wonderful place to live if it weren't for the thugs who have taken over most of the areas.

The key lines ran until around the middle 50's. My dad used to commute to work in SF from Berkeley on it. One terminus was right below the Claremont Hotel.

"To Understand the INNER East Bay, You Must First Understand San Pablo Ave".

There, fixed the title.

EAST Bay Nostalgia:

Remember the Partridge Family TV Show about a rock n roll/pop band with a School Bus re-painted in "psychedelic colors"?

If I remember correctly, the show was set in "SAN PABLO".

It was the early 1970's and the San Francisco music scene was huge; it seemed fitting to set this family pop music show in a San Francisco suburb.

Sidenote:
Because they rarely talked about the town of San Pablo much, nor where it was located or anything I think the producers thought they had created a fictional town called San Pablo because there was no San Pablo in Southern Cal. It seems any reference to location implied they were in a LA suburb.

If they intentional set the show in a Northern Cal suburb of San Francisco they never really talked about the East Bay/SF or anything NorCal. Or maybe they did and I just don't remember that. :-)

Good article written by the guy who runs Bay Area Memes, which is a real gem if you have an odd sense of humor. The author lives in Vallejo and works in Richmond. P.S. I had trouble with the link provided, so give this one a shot: https://brokeassstuart.com/2019/09/2...-pablo-avenue/
