My understanding is that one is allowed to take a walk around one's own neighborhood for fresh air, physical/mental exericise/health as long as one practices social distancing.
Is one allowed to drive ~1 hour away from home to a non-crowded park to walk/hike again practicing social distancing, Or the very act of distant travel not allowed as risky (unless essential activity)?

I don't think that scenario is addressed specifically, but there's no way they can or should prevent that.

If/when the day comes where "the state" wields the power to micromanage your movements to that degree, then we'll have a much bigger problem than this or any virus could bring.

Probably not because you're not supposed to leave the county unless it's for "essential activities".

that makes sense. what if while driving an hour out you break down and then you are stuck in a more exposed infecting situation. was driving an hour out then too high a risk. was it an essential activity

I'm from Sacramento and I think we'll be joining this order soon. Is this more of a strong suggestion to shelter in place vs a lawful order? How do cities dictate what functions are essential? In an article I read it said gig and grocery workers would need to continue to work. Seems like that makes who needs to be sheltered very subjective.

The restrictions are enforceable by law, but police announced that it is expected that people will voluntarily comply. The directive has clear explanations of what is and is not allowed. Here is what the City and County of San Francisco released: https://sf.gov/stay-home-except-essential-needs

People are encouraged to go outside to walk and hike as long as they don't do it with a group and maintains the 6ft "social distancing" requirement.

It is much more a strong suggestion than a "lawful" order and since there is an infinite number of scenarios in life involving movement and the reasons for it, interpretation is indeed very subjective. It is also debatable, to say the least, whether this "lawful" order is constitutional and would survive a court challenge.

Shutting down bars, concerts, and big sports events is doable and manageable, but they're not going to start booking individuals into the system for doing what the OP asks about. If the day ever comes when they do, we will know that we have officially become China.

The West is too arrogant, we should be accepting the help from South Korea and learn how they were able to curb it so fast despite being much more dense.

I don't know if we even have factories set up to make these in the USA to be honest. Most are made in China and you can't just snap your fingers and create a factory unfortunately.
