This is a report on the affects of crack cocaine in SF. Its from 1988. They mentioned several housing projects that were around back then.

I kinda forgot about how violent things were surrounding crack cocaine back then. Drug dealers who had a lot of money were probably prime targets for robberies.

Thanks for posting this. I remember how things were back then. I spent some time around the Valencia Gardens and the TL. Seen some horrible things...

Also, the early to mid 90's were really bad, as well. Along with the local dealers, there were a lot of dealers and gang members who came from LA.

And compared to today, i would say that the availability of drugs is worse now, but the violence/murder factor is not.

Not too familiar with SF but things are night and day now compared to then in Oakland. For example 24th and Telegraph used to be one of the busiest dealing corners in the state in the early 90s, now it’s purely cafes, art galleries and a movie theater. I do remember Valencia Gardens back in the day...you stayed on the other side of the block if you didn’t want to get taken for an informant/cop on the spot.

A lot of folks (that survived crack) are still messed up.

I worked in Oakland and 3 years in the early 1980s in the field, often collecting overdue water bills. I remember places like Brookfield Village, Sobrante Park, Alvingroom Court near 73rd/MacArthur and

the Acorn areas as being the worst for seeing "transactions" taking place, and having to really watch my back.
