Growing Up in Oakland as a Teenager holds fond memories. Oakland during that time period was a pretty good place to live. When I came back from the Korean War & College to live in Napa but work out of Oakland the city had under gone dramatic change, and not good. I would not want to live in Oakland now.

Places and their topography remain mostly the same. It is the people and what they bring and do to these places that change them. Population increases and the tension it creates can have negative psychological effects. Pandemics are scary to people but maybe beautiful to Mother Earth because maybe she can rest easy without so many people trampling all over her and ruining her splendor.

Regardless of what you think of Oakland, the biggest issue would be if you could afford to move back. Maybe you can. Without knowing your specific grievance, it is hard to respond accurately. Hope you are happy in Roseville.

Oakland is the place made famous by Gertrude Stein for saying "There's no there there". This was in 1937. So it sounds like Oakland was never really a happening place to be. People tend to have fond memories of where they grew up, but maybe sour on their hometowns later on as they grow older and more jaded, when they see that their hometown has changed. I bet people growing up in Oakland now often love the place.

She was literally talking about her childhood home, not the city itself

The author of that article was just speculating on what she meant, others might disagree.
