A new Chronicle article highlights how San Francisco has had the biggest slump (26.7%) in prices of all big city rental markets in the country in 2020. I was surprised to see that median rent for a 2-bedroom apartment is down to $2,305! With those kinds of prices, SF might actually become "affordable" again. San Jose made it to 6th on the list, and Oakland was 8th.

Damn, that's on par with 2-bedrooms in the outer East Bay (PH, Walnut Creek).

I think many of the WFH techies are using this opportunity to temporarily live elsewhere. Many of them may decide to make it permanent when they discover what other areas have to offer.

SF has some great things like exceptional weather, beautiful scenery, and lots of access for three day weekend getaways - all of which can be challenging to find elsewhere, but the costs and the homelessness, property crime, and dirty streets are probably not missed by many.

Yeah, this is accurate. We've been looking at SF rents and are surprised at how "reasonable" they've become, with no catch. (Aside from all the negatives of SF that everyone knows about, but these also applied when things were expensive.)

One of my kids will be moving this summer/early fall to San Francisco for work... wonder if this dip in rents will still be "a thing"...
