I will be moving to san mateo and will need to buy a new car - I'm mostly interested in the volkswagen rabbit but would consider honda civic.

I started looking at dealers in San mateo area (between san fran and san jose) and it seems like nearly all of them have bad reviews. I would consider a civic if that is what it takes to find a good dealer (I'm not talking about price as much as the service side).

Anyways, i'm curious of anyone has used any of these dealers (mostly interested in volkswagen) and could recommend one that is not pure scum (some of the reviews are really bad).

I also took my Civic to Menlo Honda in Redwood City for service before I unloaded it for a pick up truck.

I had a very bad service-related experience with Menlo Honda. I was in an accident and they were the closest dealer, which is unfortunate because they completely botched everything they possibly could have botched as well as grossly overcharging the insurance company (which I'm pretty sure didn't go over well when it was time to reset my rates). Ron Harvey in Burlingame was also not impressive, though they did pick me up at my workplace when the car was done. Best experience I've had so far was with the closest dealer to me now, Grace Honda in San Bruno. I bought my car in the South Bay, though, because I worked at the dealership briefly and the fleet manager got me a sweet deal.

Don't know about Volkswagen because I would never touch one with a twelve-foot pole personally. I know that the SSF dealership on Chestnut just closed its doors, so don't try to go there!

I bought my Accord at Capitol Honda in San Jose (south SJ), and had a pretty good experience - helluva a deal too! And I used to have a VW, which I bought at Boardwalk in Redwood City... actually knew one of the salesmen there, so I'm a little biased, but they're fairly honest for car dealers.

Boardwalk website: Boardwalk Auto Center - Chevrolet, Chrysler, Jeep, Lotus, Nissan, Volkswagen
Capitol Honda, currently "under maintenance": http://www.capitolhonda.com/

Btw, I read some reviews on Boardwalk, and there are lots of complaints about their service dept - but the sales reviews are quite positive! So if you buy a car there, I guess you might want to find another place for servicing. I personally never had a problem with them... always friendly and efficient, maybe a tad overpriced, but they did have a car rental (Budget?) on-site which is nice.

Well so far boardwalk and sonnen are the only VW dealers near san mateo (and sonnen is not that near) that have a satisfactory rating from the BBB. So I guess I'll check boardwalk out. I'm leaning towards the rabbit 2door over the honda civic coupe (I think the civic is a more reliable car but the SI is expensive and the non-si lacks the pep of the plain rabbit - also I'm not in love with the new civic dashboard and the accord is larger than I need)...

I was mostly considering honda if i could not find a decent VW dealer (very surprise by the lack of a quality dealership - guess I've been spoiled). I'd still go with honda i guess if i found a very very good honda dealer over a so so vw dealer.

Sonnen, as in Marin?

Dude, that's far.

You know, I have fairly extensive experience with customer service reviews and its a rule of thumb in the industry that complaints usually stem from an experience only half as bad as the person says.

Not sure what marin is but this place was 56 miles from san mateo. Anyways boardwalk in redwood looks clean - at least for purchase.

I'm amazed at how many of the volkswagen dealers have negative ratings by BBB I would have expected better in that part of the country.

Marin County, where I live, is where Sonnen is located. Kinda far imo but that's just me.

Anyway,
I didnt know low ratings was so prevalent in VW dealerships. I wonder why?
