East Oakland has always been a problem hasn't it?

It does seem there has been a spike in shooting and murders in Oakland and it should be a real concern. A elevated crime rate in Oakland is nothing new though. Looking back in time at homicide data for Oakland, I see the years 1992 & 1993 both had over a 150 homicides reported in Oakland.

I recall this from the past

Here's another shooting fresh off the presses. This one occurred in an upscale, wealthy part of Oakland far, far away from the usual gang turf:

There is no denying the crime wave is getting worse.

Maybe it will reach a tipping point?

I got caught up in the sideshow coming home and as best as I can describe it is the wild west except for horses substitute high horsepower cars...

Highway Patrol visible but taking no action.

At $5 a gallon and a set of tires every week clearly money isn't an issue for the performers...

It's clear there is little fear of consequences and filming almost encouraged...

As mentioned homes are selling quickly and for record high prices.

It's sad to see neighbors leave and most I know are professional 30 something couples...

I walk a lot and casually meet a lot of neighbors...

Crime is the topic...

The last two new in the neighborhood both experienced smash and grabs in their first two weeks... hardly a welcome.

I saw on ABC 7 a news story regarding a estimated 500 cars showed up for a side show in Oakland

That was the end of a car chase that began in East Oakland, on the other side of town. Thats no excuse obviously but its context.

Don’t know the count but it went on and on and on…

Traffic paralyzed and rules of the road out the window plus the occasional pop pop…

Off hand I don't recall any reports of shooting at side shows. The poster above mentioned hearing "pop, pop" at that side show he saw. I am not sure if the pop pop was guns being fired in the air....? I do think there is risk of violence breaking out if rival criminal gangs happen to be present at a side show though
