Used to be deaths people talked about. Now shootings. Progress maybe, even in a pandemic twisted nightmare the world is in. Thanks again China.

It could be defunding . In Atlanta proper shootings have been on the rise. It’s definitely an issue. In theory California has stricter gun laws and should be lower.

I haven't been following crime in Oakland, but like other major cities, I am not surprised it's up.

I don't have any official reason why it would be up, but I would venture a guess: All kinds of bad things associated with the pandemic - like unemployment, despondency, depression, anxiety, etc.

I wouldn't blame it on "defunding," because there is no indication that has happened or what the experts would have to say about it (both police and social workers).

Gun laws have zero correlation to homicides and shootings. Many guns used in homicides are obtained illegally. Moreover, you've got cities like Austin and El Paso in an open carry state with very low homicides.

It's Oakland.... always has been a cesspit and will continue to be. The End.

Oakland was enjoying a true resurgence after decades of stagnation.

Investment, business openings, uptown, destination dining and just a flurry of activity.

The pandemic has delivered a gut punch not only economically but also psychologically taking a toll.

That said... real estate continues to set records in both price and days on the market.

I have always found Oakland to be a collection of neighborhoods.
