Bullwinkle J. Moose’s namesake was a 1950s Ford dealership owner in Oakland.

The dealership owner’s name was Clarence Bullwinkel. Bullwinkle’s creators thought the name was amusing so they used it for their moose.

Bullwinkle J. Moose and Rocket J. Squirrel (“Rocky”) were created in 1959 by Alex Anderson and Jay Ward. Bullwinkle’s and Rocky’s middle initial was J, in honor of creator Jay Ward.

Creators Alex Anderson and Jay Ward went to Cal (UC Berkeley). Clarence Bullwinkel’s Ford dealership was in the Claremont district of Oakland, near the intersection of Claremont and College, at 6301 Claremont Ave.

Today a Safeway grocery store occupies that space. Map here —

I have a 3 dvd set on Rocky and Bullwinkle! I watch it for an hour in the mornings, sometimes more. Beats watching the news.

"Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out my hat!"

"But that trick never works!"

"This time for sure! PRESTO!"

Haha funny. But the Claremont District is nice. And the hills of Oakland offer some fantastic views of the bay.

Thanks for posting this - great memories. Never knew or would have guessed that this show had roots in Berkeley.

Only '59 to '64? Wow....seems Rocky and Bullwinkle, along with Boris and Natasha, were perpetual throughout my youth. The reruns continued for long after that, for good reason. This was a series that could hold attention far beyond childhood.

It would be fascinating to see a photo of Mr. Bullwinkle's Ford dealership as it was.

I would add that the Claremont neighborhood is in Oakland and Berkeley .

The first line of the Wikipedia article……”The Claremont district is a neighborhood straddling the city limits of Oakland and Berkeley in the East Bay section of the San Francisco Bay Area in California, United States”.

In the days before cellular maps and handheld GPS, you could pretty much tell which city you were in by looking at the street signs…….green with white/white-ish lettering = Oakland, and white/white-ish with black lettering - Berkeley….and the Oakland signs = bigger, a different shape, and usually somewhat ‘reflectorized’.

Same here.

I also had a a very droll college professor (in Economics) who, when he could, would find a way to bring up Rocky and Bullwinkle when interacting with the class. It was hilarious. And smart as well…..students listened even more keenly.

Yes, I know. I posted that as a former long-time resident of the Claremont neighborhood, Berkeley/Oakland. And don't forget Montclair. There have been people on this forum in the past who didn't believe posts on the safe, scenic, even bucolic parts of Oakland. Oakland gets stereotyped, and not in a good way, which is why I posted my earlier comment. Now we can be proud of Bullwinkle.
