If you're not already familiar ,Lafayette Reservoir very nearby would be the place for a safe, paved walk around a lake. Playground too!

I'm sort of partial to Lake Chabot. It has lots of biking and hiking trails. Then of course there's the lake.
Go to the EBRP site Parks | East Bay Regional Parks

The East Bay Regional Park System is really quite impressive. If you enjoy hiking, you've come to the right place.

Would it be considered cheeky if I suggested the best thing to do in the Bay area for young families is to consider moving elsewhere?

Not cheeky- but unrealistic and untrue. My husband being from Utah and Arizona and Mexico says our children have done more in their 4 yrs in the bay area than he did until he moved here at 16. There is an abudance of fun family things. From Fairyland to the Aquarium (no PHx and SLC did not have them- thought Tulsa does- it's wierd) to the county Fair. And that is just in the last 2 months.

Old Faithful Geyser in Calistoga is a great place to bring a picnic lunch. Fainting goats and plenty of room to run around. The Geyser is really cool. Not sure how far that is from you but if you are in for a longer day trip it's worth it.

Don't forget Lawrence Hall of Science at Berkeley (in Berkeley Hills). My 8 yo math nerd has loved LHS for years. They have cool animals downstairs that you can study and pet.

The new SF Academy of Science is going to be so wonderful! I got to go (through my volunteer job) for a behind-the-scenes tour last week. Amazing! When my son was little, we had a membership so that we could go at least once a month or more. We drove from Marin County because it was such an experience (along with the Japenese Tea Garden, Stowe Lake, etc.) That was the old Academy, before they moved out of Golden Gate Park. The new one will be even better! I don't have little ones anymore, but I'm still going to get a membership.

If you buy a family membership (about $80/year) at any one of the museums such as LHS or Chabot Space and Science, you will receive discounted (usually 1/2 price) admissions to many other museums who have reciprocal membership agreements.

train Town in Sonoma is a favorite of ours. Oakland Knowland Park Zoo is a great zoo with lots of kiddy rides. Santa Cruz is a fun day trip too. Have fun!
