San Francisco is much much different from a normal city since it is surrounded on three sides by water. The only sketchy parts of the city are Tenderloin, parts of Mission, and Hunters/Bayview. The city really doesn't have an intense compton-type thing though.

Mission district is our hood. Also Bay View district. But tourists will never wander into those areas (good for them!).
