I bare wittness, I like to walk alot despite having free public transportation besides walking is good for you and the walks can be breath taking if your going up a steep hill and coming down hill but regardless the walks are very senic and interesting.

We seem to have walking corridors in the city, the Mission the Height, the Financial District, downtown, the Castro/Church steet area just about everywhere east of Park Presidio Blvd every neighborhood is like it's only village or town.

People do tend to walk alot here in the city and I myself dont mind walking.

Sounds awesome! SF is my kinda city, then I love walking to places b/c it helps me get my exercise in, and I don't have to enroll in a gym! Plus I like being out and about; walking allows for more social interaction than driving. I feel like I'm in a pod when I am driving.

I found that true. Especially downtown.

So, me and my friend will spend 4 days in San Francisco when we are on Holiday in the United States. We have rented a car for the entire trip. I was wondering? after reading this topic. Do you advise us to park the car somewhere (cheap?) in the city and continue our transportation in public transportation or on foot?

If you say yes, what would be a good place to park the car safely for 4 days?

Get yourself a rental that has gps and take your car where ever you go with you, park at validated parking it's safer than parking on the street and dont leave any valuables inside your car, then you can take public transportation or the ferrys.

since your a tourist, I would highly recommend you use the rental car, buy a FAST MAP of SAN FRANCISCO, you can park your car at the hotel that you will be staying, and use the car for those out of the way places you might want to see.

hotels usually have parking included during your stay

This is not the case if you are staying the heart of San Francisco. For example, hotels in the Financial District or Fisherman's Wharf area charge $40-50/day for parking.

In defense of Moxie, I've definitely heard the same thing about feeling embarrased to walk in LA. It's definitely a strange concept, but very true.

Have you seen the movie "L.A. Story" with Steve Martin? There's a scene where he gets ready, hops in his car, and drives like 1/2 block to his friend's house... and another scene where somebody from England suggests walking, and everyone gasps in horror. Soooo L.A., and then they complain about the smog & traffic.

Personally I love to walk, and it's one of my favorite things about living in San Francisco... unfortunately I have bad knees (requiring surgery soon), and it's pretty tough to avoid steep hills in SF. My neighborhood & downtown are pretty flat, though, so I just try to take advantage of those areas.

Yup. My brother is currently at the Hyatt Union Square, and he said they charge $40 to park - so I parked at a lot across the street (when we had dinner), at $14 for about 2.5 hours.
