Ok, basically I need to know where to live..I got a job in Palo Alto....and I'm looking for a place to live, I don't mind riding the train so I don't need to live directly in Palo Alto..The issue is I'm looking for a "descent" apartment and the most I can afford would be $1600, I always want a safe neighborhood that I can walk around with common sense, as I am a female.....Um..diversity would be nice too and parks etc....I don't mind hopping on the train so if a descent apartment is the right distance that's fine with me...O' one more thing..My husband's college is in Hayward...so a central location between Hayward and Palo Alto would be great....so all input needed on the areas around there...All input much appreciated...

Mountain View is a great town... safe, clean, convenient to PA & San Jose, CalTrain stop, great library, diversity (mostly Asian/Indian & Hispanic), tons of outdoor recreation, and a nice downtown area on Castro St. The rent is also more reasonable than Palo Alto & Menlo Park, so you could find something in that price range. There are parts that aren't quite as nice, like around California & Rengstorff, but even that isn't really bad. I think MV would be a good fit for you!

I wouldn't suggest living on the East side of the bay, if you're working in Palo Alto. Even though the Dumbarton has pretty light traffic, you still have to cross a bridge - which means $4/day and possible traffic issues (accidents & breakdowns can cause MAJOR back-ups). Plus you'd probably have to drive on 880, which is a traffic nightmare!
