San Francisco does sometimes carry particular stereotypes. But as a long time Bay Area/San Francisco Resident I would characterize the city as a grand mixture of all different types of people. Another great thing about the city is that it really is all about what you put into it. San Francisco is known for its plethora of groups and activity clubs. For example some of my guy friends have recently signed up for a fitness boot camp in the city called my fit muse where they get to get fit in the city with cute girls as their work out partners. Needless to say San Francisco really should not be described as either gay or straight, but more as creative, distinct and full of opportunities to meet great people.

San francisco has its gay and dyke communtiy which its known for. My freind lives up there now and he likes it. He works with so many hot straight ladies i might go visit him soon and i was just there in june. Ne ways its not that bad gays dont plaque the street like San FRancisco is known 4 homeless do though.

What exit are you from in Jersey? I was exit 9 on the turnpike. Yes, San Francisco is a gay mecca and there are many metrosexuals here. If you wanna hang around with "regular guys" (Not gay) Try La Honda,Pacifica or Colma (go to Malloy's tavern) Great place for a fist fight, everyone else is dead. Hope this helps. ) Regards Ms. Ripley

Listen to all the critics.

Is SF really that gay? People are people? blah blah....

Well, gays themselves sure and hell seem to care about whether it is or not, or whether any place is, why can't a straight person ask the same question?

The intolerance masquerading as tolerance. What a laugh! This is like a person who belongs to the NAACP telling someone else not to be a racist, or think that way. Hypocrisy.

There is an entire cottage industry of travel books devoted to discussing how gay places are. Go figure.

That being said, in SF, gays and asians have their separate worlds, and so do yuppies, etc. Cities can handle more than one group of people.

It's not hypocrisy when the two situations are completely different... gay people ask these questions because they HAVE to, since homophobia is damaging both physically and mentally. When was the last time you heard of heterophobia occurring? Same reason interracial couples & minorities have to ask similar questions - not (usually) because they don't want to be around other people, but because they don't want to be subjected to racism. One side is asking because they want to be accepted & safe, the other is asking because they want to be segregated. Make sense?

I am so tired of the comparison to being black and being gay. When you are black, you don't have a choice. You exhibit the very thing that is used to stereotype or discriminate against you all day, every day. Sexuality is a characteristic; it can be hidden. Unless you are displaying traits that are stereotyped as G/L, sexuality is not questioned.

Also note, the NAACP (founded by a DIVERSE group which included 3 whites) was established and continues to operate under the premise for the necessity to advance people of color in a world where we are not treated with fairness or equality. It is not racism when you work to uplift a group of people that have a history of being disrespected, denounced, and denied basic human dignity and liberty.

Mr. Hammond along as we all live in a white male-dominated world inequality, and discrimination will persist. Thus, the need for these activist organizations. Trust!
