If I caltrain it, I'll have to get off in mt view then light rail it to my work. That's about 1:40 commute.

Would driving be substantially faster ? is traffic coming into the city in the morning? would I be doing the reverse commute..?

Yes, you'd be doing a reverse commute for the first part... but then you'll hit the mid-Peninsula to Silicon Valley commuters (probably around Redwood City), and that can get nasty. The whole idea is a bit gutsy, to be honest, but I've done worse!

If you drive I'd suggest taking 280, even though it's a tad illogical - the traffic is a bit lighter, so you might be able to maintain your sanity that way. My sister lives in Sunnyvale and I always take 280, even when traffic isn't heavy, because it's simply a nicer drive (and you can go REALLY fast at night). I switch over at 85, then get off at Fremont St. which is the first exit... takes me about 35-40 minutes on a good day, and I'm coming from the southeast part of SF.

There is no reverse commute in that case IMO. I would expect driving to save you about 20-25 minutes at most and it would be a huge annoyance; I drive the stretch of 101 from San Francisco to San Mateo as seldom as I possibly can, not so much because of the traffic but because it's such an awful road.

Thanks - I'll seriously have to consider caltrain/light rail then. At least until an opportunity opens up in SF.... I'm single and I don't want to let my job dictate where I'll end up

Amen to that. I live right off 101 & Paul Ave, so I usually HAVE to deal with that stretch - which I've affectionately named "the Indy 101." People drive like maniacs, particularly the millions of cabs coming to/from SFO, and the road itself is all torn up... I do like that one spot (101 North near Brisbane) where you can catch air, though. Anyway, it's a bad drive regardless, so I'd definitely consider CalTrain or taking 280. Good luck!
