At any rate, you're not going to get east of 580 for under $100K.

Hmm, that's strange..... I breathe in Oakland all the time and as far as I know, I've never even heard gunfire, let alone been shot.

94605 has Sheffield Village, doesn't it? I drove my mom through that and she kept saying well -- THIS isn't Oakland ... And 94605 goes up into the Oakland Hills -- Skyline Blvd... and Chabot Park....where the stables are.

I get that a lot... a couple of weeks ago my neighbor was having AT&T DSL installed and the installer commented that he was born and raised in Hayward and never knew Oakland had nice neighborhoods (He was covering for someone on vacation)

5 digit zip codes often cover vary diverse territory in a city like Oakland... the new expanded zip codes more accurately pin point specific neighborhoods...

The map shows 94605 going all the way to Redwood Road's Willow Park out Castro Valley way...

I've heard that 580 is a dividing line--would being on the east side of MaCarthur Blvd. be much better than the west side?

Generally, but it's still variable. The house I'm buying is west of MacArthur, but east of 580. It's a better neighborhood than the other houses I was looking at just east of MacArthur, but not quite as nice as Maxwell Park which is west of 580.

I've always heard MacArthur Blvd is the dividing line -- above is better than below.

I never got the whole east west north south thing.

And forget about left and right!

I really like the area just below 580 between Fruitvale and Highh St(east of Foothill). Just so fascinating as it straddles "good" and "Bad". Its one of the better "hood areas" around and mainly is home to middle and upper middle class households. Its strange because it has a strong family feel to it yet is so diverse and gritty but not really ghetto.

That's Allendale. The house I'm buying is actually in the enrollment zone for Allendale Elementary. I also looked at a little 'hood called Peralta-Hacienda which is close to the Peralta Creek.. very interesting, feels like the hills. Maxwell Park is also under 580, east of High Street.
