You don't want to raise your kids in Novato.

How long could one expect to drive (or take the golden gate transit) for going from SF to petaluma in the morning and back in the evening? Any suggestions of a place in SF to live to make that commute a little easier?

Charles, most of the time I agree with you, but on this one, I do not. I wouldn't hesitate to raise kids in Novato? Why do you feel this way?
Now, as for the commute, I think I would stay closer to San Rafeal (it would save a few minutes anyone) or certainly Loma Verde. I would not want to do the Petaluma thing.

It will take about an hour from Novato and no, there is no decent public tranportation, but the area is beautiful.

Nita

Sorry Nita but ok. I just did the morning commute yesterday from Petaluma to SF...on the plus side, there are less people on the roads as of late...on the not so plus side, alot of people are out of work. That being said, I drove from Petaluma to Divisadero and Post (pretty close to the center of the city, so add on more time if your heading downtown financial district) but I left the gas station in Petaluma at 6:44 am and arrived at my destination at 7:16. And no, I was NOT doing 85 mph...I'd say I averaged speed of about 68mph or so. So that was Tuesday morning commute June 30 2009.

I needed to be at the Doc. at 8am, and I meant to leave at 6:30 at the latest...but I was running late, as usual...(6:30 for an 8am appt. would've been a more normal time frame to be on the safe side of commuting from Ptown to SF about this time last year, but frankly it's almost back to the 'traffic' levels of more than 5 years ago.

Hey, I am glad to hear that, no reason to apologize, I was just being very conservative, but do remember, you ledt at 6:30, 20 minutes or so later, what would the traffic been like?

yeah this is exactly the issue ...not sure about other people but pretty much every job I've had starts at 9...I usually show up around 8:45.

There can be backups on the GG bridge approach in the PM as I understand it, but not as bad as the main commute. You'll fly along 101, the problems start when you get into San Francisco (depending on which part of the city you're going to).
