Please share the places that people without health insurance can visit when their tonsils are swollen or they break a leg? Those of you without out health insurance can relate, there is a huge fear of going to the doctor when you need to, because of the bills after ward.

Ideally, this place would charge on an income contingent scale if at all.

Please discuss the quality of care there and the typical wait time. Please mention, if I need spend the entire day there.

I look forward to your response!

Healthcare is a challenge in SF. Several urgent care clinics are available. Fees vary and most do not accept insurance. There is an urgent care center in the Mission that charges something like $60 for 15 minutes. Not sure about the quality of care there, or how fast it is. There is an ER doc who actually does house calls for around $225. He spends as much time with his patients as they need, and he even brings lab tests, meds, and all supplies with him. Even calls his patients afterwards to check on them. Very cool. Dr. John Horning 415-680-4153. I don't think he does much free care though.

San Francisco has a socialized health care system, but I understand space is limited. Information: Healthy San Francisco:

I'm not 100% sure if it's still there, but I used to go to a low cost clinic within UCMedical center on Parnassus St. where they would charge on a sliding scale fee.

There are drop-in clinics around the Bay Area, mostly on the Peninsula... a good one is Immediate Care in San Mateo, where I used to go before I had insurance. I know they have another one around San Bruno, but will have to research the name/address for you. In my experiences they were very good, and only charged like $40 when I went in with a broken foot - the XRays ended up costing more (at another place), but that's a complicated story.

Even without health insurance, there still may be help.

SFHealthy may not be health insurance, but it allows you to pay on a sliding scale. The website makes sure you know if you have a health emergency outside of San Francisco, you must pay on your own. But it will help if you visit their sites in San Fransciso you earn less than $2,601 for a household of one, live in San Francisco, and have not had heath insurance for 90 days. Also, you can't qualify for Medi-Cal.

Thanks Gizmo980 for the tip on Immediate Care in San Mateo. I found the website. Immediate Care - Home

Also, there is QuickHealth. Welcome to QuickHealth: Services These clinics don't accept insurance and will allow you to pay for services via cash or credit card. The rates are on the website. We have them in Oakland and San Francisco, but I have no idea about the quality of service. But from my experience with doctors, I don't see how their service be any worse than a traditional doctor in a private office.

An old SFChronicle article discussed this LiveWell Medical Clinic in San Bruno, but it's website seems geared to people with insurance that can drop in. LiveWell Medical Clinic An year old review on yelp.com says the quality at this clinic is great, I wonder if that is still true today. (Livewell Medical Clinic - San Bruno, CA 94066)

Is this the clinic in San Bruno that you discussed Gizmo?
