And puts Oakland on the cover:

(I can't find an online link to the article itself -I guess they want you to actually buy the magazine!)

well if New Orleans can make the list there really isn't any reason Oakland can't, haha. Good for Oakland, it's not as bad as it's reputation and deserves some respect. But I would like to see the criteria and methodology used to name Oakland and New Orleans some of the best cities to live in and say Oakland has the best climate in the nation.

This is Outside magazine we're talking about, so I assume it's referring to Oakland's park system which is indeed astounding.

Agreed. If you've never been up into the Oakland hills to hike or bike, you have a treat waiting for you--the park system is far above and beyond any other city I've lived in, even much larger ones. (Granted it's largely East Bay Regional Park District land, but several parks are also city-run and equally astounding--and they're all within city limits. Also great off-leash hikes for dogs in many areas.)

For what it's worth, some of Oakland's city-run park and rec facilities are exceptional, as well--the newly-renovated Studio One art center, the Lake Merritt boathouse, etc. Not to say that many others couldn't use some funding, but still. I can see calling Oakland one of the best places in the country to live if your primary factor is having stellar outdoor areas close to home.

Have you ever been to Oakland? It has many wonderful areas, and has features that would appeal especially to people that like the outdoors.

Indeed. Oakland has very nice parklands.

As an aside, Oakland has 1.7 Million trees vs 600,000 in SF.
