As long as you're doing that -- there's a breathtaking view of the city on 24 in Oakland.... it's almost as if you round a corner and there it is.

Yeah, Mission Bay is a redevelopment area. It used to be a railyard. Beginning in 1998, the area was designated as a redevelopment zone, resulting in its taking off and gentrification.

The last I checked, the area has a lot of newer housing stock, mostly condominiums, geared toward the middle-class and upper-middle class professionals. Most of the homes are too expensive for the middle-class, however. Affordable housing in the mix was designed to help in bringing in the middle-class, but I think the majority of the condominiums were and are still being sold at market-rate.

Definitely get a new map for that area. 303 acres of new urban development definitely calls for one.

I used to drive over Altamont Pass ALL the time, when I lived in Stockton... it is really pretty, and the windmills are very cool looking. I'm not sure it's the prettiest in the whole US, but it is worth a look!

Btw, my favorite sight in the area is on 101 south, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. You come through Waldo Tunnel (I had to look that one up ), and BAM - you're hit with the most amazing view of the bridge, bay and city. Still takes my breath away every time!

I would guess that if you found NYC to be too pricey, you would come to the same conclusion about SF... At least in NYC you have the ability to live a reasonably short subway ride away in an area with more affordably priced housing, but good luck finding a place that that near San Francisco.

Ellen - Please take your time and expierance the City. You are only young once, so do not be afraid and live life to the max. A motor scooter is the best way for a gal to get around the City they are very cheap and easy to park. Get a GPS if you have too. Regards Ripley

I figured out what part of San Francisco I want to live in - Merced Manor, the area around Lowell High. I've never seen so many BEAUTIFUL '30s and '40s homes in my life. This was my favorite, just stunningModerator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed
...But I really want to live on Crestlake, or on Wawona just north of Stern Park. OK, time to save up for the rest of my life so I can afford the down payment!
