Hello forum,

Me and my family are planning to move on to 22nd Ave on sunset. I have always thought that the sunset district is one of the safest areas in the city.

However, yesterday I read an article from the Chronicle about the crime in sunset district.

S.F.'s homey Sunset fights housing blight

Is the sunset really getting bad or should I read that article in a way that the district is working effectively against the crime?

What are the safest areas in the city and what is the future of the sunset district?

Thanks.

I only lived in the Sunset briefly, but I had to laugh when they used the word "rougher" to describe any part of it. In a city of 750,000 there are going to be some bad apples, but on the whole the Sunset is not bad at all, unless for some reason you really don't like sushi.

I lived in the Sunset too, and it was always very safe... that was about 14 years ago, but I don't think things have changed much. Come to my current neighborhood (Bayview) if you want to see what crime really is, LOL.

The sunset as a whole is very safe. There are a couple areas, mostly down towards the ocean that are a little grittier and might have some shady looking characters hanging about sometimes...and the truth is, there are shootings in the Sunset at least a couple times every year, usually related to Asian gangs or drug transactions gone bad. But, that's the extent of it. It's nothing at all like the real sketchy areas in SF. It's such a large neighborhood that I would say 90% is as safe as you could get with the rest having just a little more crime. Nothing to worry about. Though there are many neighborhoods in SF that are overall more "tame," you won't find anything nearly as safe as the sunset for the same price.

You would have to be really sheltered from the world to think that the Sunset is a dangerous place to live. Tell somebody from the Mission, the Tenderloin, or Hunters Point that you think the Sunset is hardcore, and they will laugh in your face.

Sunset is fine. Crime is up everywhere in this country. Sunset is not a dangerous neighboord in the least. My 82 year-old grandfather has lived there as long as I've been alive. The only downside it is one of the foggier neighboorhoods.

Sunset is may be scary if you're scared of Asians but other than that no.

I personally consider that (fog) to be a positive trait, and I HATE how sunny it is in the Bayview! But yeah, for most people it gets a bit gloomy... even - especially - in the summer it can get reaaaaallllly thick out there.
