Why is it so hard to find a job in SF? (San Francisco: insurance, job market)

I am a new grad physical therapist from Midwest. I have tried to find a job in a hospital in SF for months, but nobody responded my email.

That is not very surprising. A better bet would be to actually apply for a position by using the medical center's employment site. Most have them, where open positions are listed and on-line applications can be filled out. Most HR dept personnel at the hospitals are just too overworked to reply to the zillions of e-mails asking about open positions. To be frank, e-mails asking about open positions are way too numerous to reply to individually 99% of the time.

The global job market is faltering somewhat, but there's no reason you should let this deter you. Somebody's working afterall. I used to recruit and I'll tell you the first thing you want to do is see yourself in your next job. Don't affirm that it's hard to find a job in SF or you will keep finding yourself finding it hard. Know what I mean? Visualize. Visualize. Visualize. And put your resume up on monster and other sites that cater to your field. Network with your former colleagues, managers, teachers, your friends, etc. Someone you know, knows someone who has the perfect job for you. You just have to get out there. Think positive.

Are you targeting only San Francisco? What about the surrounding cities and towns? You gotta start somewhere, y'know?

I would think a position like a physical therapist would be a job the hospital would hire with a local candidate. Why spend the time and effort hiring someone from the midwest when they can hire someone already in the area?

Maybe you should move out here first and then start interviewing. I know that is sort of a catch 22 and SF is really expensive compared to where you are, but might be worth it if you really want to live here.

Even with the budget crisis, you should be able to find a position in a school district. You'll be overworked, but you'll have a steady job, insurance, and get to live out here, if that's your goal.

Physical therapist in a school? I've never heard of such a thing. Is that common in Bay Area schools? Or did you mean a job teaching physical therapy?

Yep. Physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, hearing specialists, vision specialists....you name it, they're all represented in most districts, especially the larger ones.
