Well, it looks like I'll be getting a promotion and moving to the Walnut Creek area soon! Excited, but REALLY worried about the housing prices!! It's a huge shock for my family coming from such a low cost of living area. My office will be in Walnut Creek, but I don't mind driving 20-40 miles to get to the office. I would like to be within 1-1.5 hrs of the airports though. Any ideas for nice, safe areas where the housing isn't so crazy??

I really appreciate the help. I just found this board, and the threads on here are so helpful!

Walnut Creek is actually a pretty reasonable priced area and a really nice town. What's your budget?

It'd help if you defined "not so crazy", I think the Brentwood area east of Antioch has a lot of newish subdivisions going for relatively cheap with the foreclosure boom. Should be able to get something nice around 300k, maybe even bargain down a little. Pittsburg and parts of Antioch are worth avoiding, but you can find homes there between 150-300, with the low end being cheaper for good reasons(older, unmaintained, in high crime areas). If you can pay more though, definitely look closer by, commuting is a drag.

WC area along 680 or 24 corridor is a decent suburban area

Really shouldn't have to commute more than 20mins to office

Many much cheaper places are in foreclosure land...which tend to have arduous commutes to anywhere w/high-income jobs, more violent crime and lame schools....Darwinian self-selection

Walnut Creek is pretty nice. I would stay around there and it is close to Oakland Airport.

Check out Tracy, Manteca or Lathrop all within 45 minutes of Walnut Creek (if there is no traffic).

Wow...it's been a while since I've been able to get on here, thank you all for the excellent feedback! As far as price range, I'm probably looking around $300-400k...but that's just a guess. A big thing for me is resale. My job moves me around every few years, so want to make sure that I'm in a good position when it comes time to move. I'll do some research on some of the areas mentioned here. Any more ideas, let me know!

Happy Holidays!!

whats the story with discovery bay? i found houses out there that look brand new for relatively cheap. is it just because of the location?? it says that they are in gated subdivisions with a pool, guard, etc. is the commute that bad, say to an area like walnut creek??

Discovery Bay is a community sort of out in the middle of nowhere. It does a strip mall nearby for shopping (groceries and not much more). Having driven by it many times, the community appears nice with mostly 2 story McMansions. I think the commute would be awful, especially along Hwy 4.

Go with Tracy or Manteca. You shouldn't have any problems finding a house in the $300K - $400K range.
