I am a single gay man, living in Kansas, and had always thought that, once I had a little bit of money saved, I would move up there to live more freely as a gay man. However, according to many of the postings here, SF appears to be a good place to move to in your 20s, but not so much if one is older and in their 40s, like I am. I would like to move there not to become a dating fiend, but to simply live out my life more openly as a gay man. But, by the same token, I would hate to move some place where it is youth oriented and the middle aged and older are ignored or shunned. Any thoughts? Whatever happened to the accepting attitude of the 60s, which everyone wrote and talked about?

I'm sorry to say this, but homosexuality just works better in your teens and 20s.

Dear Kansas man,

I lived in SF for many, many years and the majority of my friends are gay men from 40-60+.

I think you would love it. It is refreshing to see gay couples walk hand in hand down the street just as you would see heterosexual couples all over the country do the same.

Sure, being young whether gay or straight has its perks (everything is perkier but I digress)

You get one life pal and for you to deny yourself would be a shame. Do you really want to wake up one day and say to yourself, "What if?"

P.S. To Add: I am a married straight female
I say GO FOR IT!!!!

Cheers,
Shanny

I completely agree with Shanny!
Yes! Come on out!
Pretty much all of my friends that are gay are in their late 30's and 40 +
This is the land of happy "misfit toys"
Sure, there are subgenres in LGBT community, but there is a place for all!

I dunno, it seems to me that SF caters to an older gay crowd. I think the high cost of housing especially near the castro skews demographics to a more professional (old) class. Gays are also pretty entrenched in the city, so life doesnt revolve around a single dance club or anything. If you can afford it, I would definitely suggest coming out here, I'm sure it'd be a unique experience from Kansas.

I know many middle-aged gay men & women here, and they seem just as content! You would be more than welcomed, but might have to find different avenues for meeting people - as opposed to the younger activities like club-hopping. I recently performed with the SF Gay Men's Chorus (accompanying them), and I'd guess that at LEAST half were over 40... so if you can sing, that might be one idea. I think if it's something you have always dreamed of, go ahead and make the move. Worst case scenario, you end up relocating again in a few years - not the end of the world.

P.S. My roommate is a 41 year-old gay man who grew up in LA, and he seems pretty happy here... most of his friends are around his age, so I don't think you'll have a problem finding friends/dates.

I think if you moved anywhere in the bay area would be accepted. Marin County, Sonoma County, Santa Cruz County would all be good alternatives. Speaking of Sonoma County, Guerneville, Ca could be a legitimate alternative if you aren't into the city scene. Guerneville is tucked away on the Russian River in West Sonoma County, maybe 4000 people, but very gay friendly.
