Seriously, this is a genuine question. I have lived in Chicago and Houston, and have never had an issue finding a nice gym within a reasonable distance. Since I've moved to San Francisco, and now East Bay, I have found it nearly impossible.

They're either smelly, outdated, super small, unclean, you name it. Gym chains that have ruled in other states are X-Sport, Lifetime Fitness, Powerhouse.

The only nice gym I've seen is a brand new 24 Hour Fitness Super Sport in San Mateo, but it's the only 24 hour fitness I've been to that's decent.

What's the deal here?

The citizenry are too timid to demand better facilities.

Yeap, gyms in the Bay aren't that great! Club One is nice. Any really nice gym is going to cost you.

Default Too Funny

Too funny, I thought it was just me?! Having been a gym person who has lived in Western and Central Europe, New Jersey and the suburbs of Chicago - why are the gyms here are at best just 'ok'? Gold's gyms IMHO here appear to be the best equipped and managed, I have settled in San Carlos and the gym in Redwood City is convenient, recently refurbished and the staffed by sincere folks.

I think there's a simple reason, as my roommate & I were actually discussing recently... San Francisco has great weather and TONS of outdoor activities, so people simply don't need the gym as much. Chicago is bitter cold for at least 3-4 months a year, and you cannot go bike riding - whereas my roommate bikes to work 12 months a year, with the exception of heavy rain days. This whole conversation started when I asked him whether Gold's or 24-Hour was better, and he said "I don't go to gyms. I just walk and bike everywhere."

Btw, you should find the nearest Jewish Community Center... I might be a tad biased, but they usually have very nice workout facilities. And no, you don't have to be Jewish to join. If I remember correctly, there's a HUGE one in Berkeley that has a large gym.

Agreed. But that's kinda the point. Unless you are willing to join a really exclusive club. there are no reasonable options that don't smell / look like ... crap

Land is expensive. Rent is expensive. Equipment is expensive.

The Bay Club in SF near Levi Plaza is the best in the city still? That has to be the lamest "best club" I've ever seen.
