Hello all,

I live in Sammamish, a suburb east of Seattle. My family (husband and 2 girls, age 5 and 7) and I are moving to San Francisco, where I start dental school (University of the Pacific) in July/09. We'll be in SF for 2 years (I am an advanced standing student). I read many threads about the public school system and the crime in SF, combined with the high cost of living, and I feel a little worried about how we are going to make it there for 2 years...
Anyway, UOP is in Pacific Heights. I don't think we can afford an apartment in P. Heights or vicinity that has 2 beds, a W/D and a garage, even though I confess I would love to walk to/from school instead of taking the bus.
My questions are: where to live (I know this question might bug some people). Should we give up the car and in-unit W/D and live in P. Heights or pay the same and have those conveniences but live, maybe, in the Richmond District? I know I am going to have night classes, so my next question is: is it safe to take the bus to Richmond and walk there alone, at night, or is it best to walk alone to/from school in P. Heights at night?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated...Maybe other neighborhoods I might not know about that have good transportation to P. Heights (?).

Thank you!

If you want to keep the car, Richmond is a pretty decent idea. You can take the 1 to UoP during the week and Richmond has quite a few apartments with parking. The only thing you need to make sure you're okay with is that Richmond is quite a bit more suburban. Depending on the street, there can be quite a few shops. Clement and California have a lot of shops depending on the block.

I live a couple blocks away from UoP in Pac Heights. Most places won't have parking, it's one of the most expensive neighborhoods in SF, and a separate parking space is ~$250/mo. Generally speaking, most places in neighborhoods like Pac Heights, Nob Hill, Russian Hill, North Beach, etc. won't have parking included.

As for safety, UoP is in a very safe location. I walk back home at pretty much any hour and have never run into any problems. The worst you'll get is a couple bums that sleep in lafayette park. I can't tell you about Richmond at night, as I only go there during the day, but I hear it's fairly safe.

If you do end up moving, welcome to the neighborhood.
