Hi folks -
Does anyone here know what the technical/engineering job market is like in the Bay area right now? I am a software developer who's been working in consumer electronics for about 5 years now. I work for a VERY small company, so I do a little of everything (advertising, customer support, you name it). I've poked around a bit on Craigslist and saw a number of job listings that would be perfect, but I don't know how cutthroat the competition is.

On a side note, has anyone here moved to the area without a job lined up? How long did it take you to find something?

I've really been wanting to get out of the Midwest for a while now and think the SF area would be ideal. I'm aware of the higher cost of living, but I'm used to city life, am extremely frugal and have saved up quite a bit the past few years. Thanks!!

I am wondering the same thing! I know the BAY Area has tons of High Tech companies but Is the Bay Area over saturated with Tech Folks to the point where competition is super tough and there is not enough jobs for the number of tech folks in the area?

Oh yeah there's a JOB for ya! Surely everyone wants to score a gig from someone who's offering up cell phones for sale, a house for sale ...etc etc..

Chrisl999, after 5 years in CE specifically, I'm sure there are better gigs out there for you than a "receptionist" position!

It's true there are a lot of companies out here that are tech of course
but CE is kinda spread all over the country, even near you in Michigan, for instance...
there are lots and lots of programmers/IT/web designers etc. etc. in the Bay Area, but lots of people are out of work, and even CNet just laid off a bunch of folks....
There are some serious cost of living issues that you'd be dealing with, I don't think now is the best time to move on out from KC though.
Did you go to CES?

No, never been to CES, although I tried to get sent this year. Thanks for the info though!
I'm just testing the waters right now, and am thinking of waiting until at least late 2009-early 2010 before making any sort of move. I've noticed most CE jobs (particularly smaller companies) are spread out, and that there's probably jobs right here in town if I really wanted one, but I really do need to move on for non-career reasons. I am aware of the cost-of-living issue (I've looked up housing/rental prices to get an idea), but am not too concerned since I'm single and don't plan on buying a house or anything.
