I have to get to San Fran by 7 for a class, and I am coming up from south of San Jose, so the drive is insane. The first day I took the 280 all the way up to 19th ave, but someone told me later that I should take the 101 to the 380 to the 280, which seemed even slower.

What would you all recommend for someone driving between 4:30 and 6:30?

TIA!

either move closer, or arrange to take the class over the internet or Web TV instead (i.e. "distance learning")

Unfortunately neither is a possibility. The class is physical and I am stuck where I live now. I can get there on time, I just need to know which route is less awful on most days.

I-280 would be the fastest way to SF. But if you leave as early as 4:30am Hwy 101 should be a clear route to SF.

Sorry, the classes are in the evening. 7 PM (and yes, I know that is about the worst time to make that drive).

In that case, use I-280 (I thought you meant 7am ).

Since the class is only one night a week, if you don't work during hte day, you could drive up the night before and stay at this cheap SRO:

280 is the best solution you're going to find. 101 clogs up big-time in Mountain View and then again in San Mateo. If you are close to 85, then use it to get up to 280.

Thank you all so much! I live in Gilroy, so I can take 85 to 280. I had never even thought of that. I can't drive up the night before or even during the day because I have to wait until my husband gets home and takes charge of the baby before I can leave.

Thank you again!!
