Default North Oakland is where I'd live.

North Oakland is a great place to live. North of Lake Merritt in the Crocker Highlands is perfect. Close to retail, restuarants, freeway access, several main streets of interest ( Lakeshore, Grand, Piedmont, College), close to hiking, easy and quick access to San Francisco, Berkeley and BART (bay area rapid transit), ethnic diveristy, affordable ( for CA) housing with interesting architecture ( not all 60's development like the peninsula).

Default Berkeley

Only problem with Berkeley is that it may be the most unwelcoming unfriendly town I have ever been to in my life.

Taboo2 - You have lived in Santa Cruz, Marin and the East Bay area? You are the person I need to talk to. Those are the 3 areas we are looking at. Can you help me narrow it down? We used to live in Aptos and would consider Scotts Valley because of the schools. Marin is beautiful, but it sounds like it is cold and Aptos was too cold for me. We're the liberal tree huggers with little ones so we need great public schools. We're not millionaires. Where do you think would be the best place for us? Thanks in advance!

Marin gets the rain just like the northbay. Novato and Petaluma heat up quite a bit in the summer though. They just have wet winters compared to say the east bay. Depends on where in Marin County you are going to live.
Santa Cruz has less precipitation because it is southbay. Santa Cruz has tons of tree huggers and i would guess it spills over into Scotts Valley.

Are you commuting to anywhere?
