I am currently in the process of buying a home and although I love San Francisco, I am intrigued by the purchase opportunities in San Bruno. The houses available for sale seem spacious and at a good prices.

Can you share your thoughts about investment in San Bruno and Millbrae?

I am looking for a nice neighborhood that has good schools for my 9 year old and of course, I look for safety, good services, etc.

I work in Sunnyvale, CA and live in SOMA in San Francisco. I take Caltrain every day. I am thorn between continuing commuting and living close to San Francisco. Or my other option, is to move close to work - I am not familiar with areas around Sunnyvale, but I hear Mountain View and Palo Alto are great. Heck, I might save 3 hours of commuting right?

Your advice is appreciated

If your budget can do Millbrae, then you should be thinking Mountain View, particularly the Grant area. San Bruno is a lower middle class area, and Millbrae, while affluent, is very hilly and tricky to access from 101. Not to mention, as you may be aware, the traffic between SFO and San Mateo sucks.

The particular part of MV I'm recommending looks like Los Altos, would fool a casual observer into thinking it was Los Altos, and has good enough schools for Los Altos, but it doesn't cost the same as Los Altos and it's more convenient for services and commuting. It's still up there - you won't find much under $1M - but it's a good value for the area. Zip code is 94040, around where 237 turns into Grant Rd.

Mainly thinking of the area east of El Camino.. the areas in the hills are more like Millbrae.

Watch out for the airport noise around San Bruno and South San Francisco.
