Not the worst city ever, but definitely bad at times. Most areas your common sense will tell you to stay away from. In Stockton, the decent areas run right into the ugly areas. You would not be impressed at all. The crime is high and you get hard stares from illegal aliens. I know many people have moved from Stockton, and rightfully so.

I went to college in Stockton (UOP), and got out the minute I graduated... there are definitely worse places to live, but if you don't have a good reason to live in Stockton, I'd say to look elsewhere. It has many issues with crime, racial tension/wars, lack of city funding, and gets REALLY REALLY hot in the summer. Blech! There are some nice parts of town, like Brookside and Grouse Run, but aside from that I wouldn't recommend it too highly.

You've probably noticed how cheap houses are in Stockton. There's a reason. It's not the worst place you can be but unless you already have a job or are willing to make a horrendous commute, I'd think long and hard before buying one of those cheap houses. I wouldn't count on one to use for rental income either because there's just too many empties on the market.

I have lived in Stockton for over ten years. Believe me folks, it is the armpit of the earth. Stockton is ugly, flat and beset by crime. You also get the worst kind of people. Everyday I think of ways of how I can get the hell outta here. Worst of all is the lack of quality people. You get the worst elements from black, hispanic, asian, Indian and white trash, a ghastly combination of people. There isn't any place to socialize, no night life and nearly nothing to do, accept stay at home, exercise and go to work. If you want to waste your life and flush your future down the toilet, then live in ****-hole Stockton. No decent person should have to live there.

Stockton Unified School District is 96% minorities and is Title 1. All these students are juvenile delinquents in the making. Take one look at some of the parents of these children and wager they have a criminal record. Nearly all the schools are run by underqualified people and are very unsafe. You can't go anywhere in town without being accosted by a strnager or bum on the street looking for a handout. It's gross, depressing and completely boring.

My friend lives in Stockton and says it has gotton worse. He said you used to know which part of town was good and bad, but now it's very pocketed. He is black and his wife is japanese. he told nme the other night he wished he had sold his homes and moved, but his wife wouldn't let him. She is kicking herself now.

We lived there for 3 years while hubby attended UOP. It is very boring, and has a ton of crime/gang problems! I have to say though, it was not AS bad as a lot of people have described, but it's not a place I would want to call home either. Lodi would be a much better choice!

Stockton is bad enough. There is so much racial disparity along with the lack of decent paying jobs. As of March 2009 the unemployment rate is 15%. Coincidntally the amount of college graduates is comprised of 15% of the adult population. For a decent person to start a family here would be an unwise decision.
