I am considering moving into an apartment building on the 600th block of Geary St.

The sf police map looks somewhat scary. However most accounts are fro 2-3 years ago and I am currently reading that the are is increasingly gentrified.

I currently live in Baltimore City, which may be plagued with crime, 80% of which is drug related but to a vast extent confined between those who distributed it.

If you had an opinion on this I would appreciate your advice. Thanks.

If you live in B-More then San Francisco will seem like a cake walk.
The level of poverty and crime in SF is nothing like the city where you're coming from.

The Tendernob has a very high population density, it might seem a little gritty here and there (though maybe not so much to someone from Baltimore), and it's crime would be higher than your average SF neighborhood, but it's not bad. The tenderloin, just to the south is where the real crazy stuff happens, and it's mostly drug related, just like in Baltimore or any other US city. The tendernob is between the poor, high-crime tenderloin, and the insanely wealthy nob-hill areas (hence the name), so you get some of both worlds.

Crime is crime wherever it is. Baltimore does have a much higher crime rate than SF, but that doesn't mean crime in SF is less serious or something. And in terms of perception of safety, think about this:

In 2008, Baltimore had an average of 2.3 murders per square mile, whereas San Francisco had 2.2 murders per square mile. Not much different huh? Just shows that even with a lower crime rate due to it's higher population, SF has about the same kind of concentration of crime as Baltimore, since SF is quite a bit smaller geographically. Just puts a different perspective on your typical crime comparison.

Now that's a trip! I'd never regularly even compare the two, but that's really interesting.
