I currently live in Carver county of Minnesota where there is 1 registered sex offender.

I've been planning a move to Santa Rosa for quite a while now. There are currently over 200 registered sex offenders in Santa Rosa. I have 2 young daughters and I'm naturally worried about this.

What's the deal??

So how many of them are unregistered? Don't worry, there isn't anything particular about Santa Rosa that breeds sex offeners.

You should always be concerned about sex offenders. Do more research in terms of the concentrated area you will be living in and what proximity the offenders live in relation to you and the school your kids will live in.

Yes considering that San Fransisco area is so ultra liberal I would wonder how determined they are to manage that registration process. Here in VB Florida they have a detective assigned to just keeping the facts accurate on a daily basis and investigating what's going on with all the offenders.

To get a proper ratio of citizens to offenders watch how you get your data. There isnt a system by any state I know of that collects it by zip code it's usually by county so you have to call the sex offender registry coordinator or the county sheriff or whatever they call them there, find out how many offenders are in the county and do the math against the entire county population. Its usually not easy to find at any lower level except within 5 miles of a prospective address.

The City of Piedmont CA located in the middle of Oakland CA has no Registered Sex Offenders per City-Data.com.

A friend of mine father is a registered sex offender... he married my friends mother when she was 17 and he was 30 by taking her out of State to Nevada... That was 50 years ago... my friend is 49 years old.

When the new law passed several years ago, his father then in his 70's would receive regular contact from the Police... the Officers sometimes commented that they are forced to waste time checking on these types of cases...

The definition of a Sex Offender seems to be quite broad and one that sticks with you for life... as in the case of my friends parents... now married to each other for 50 years...

The good thing about the sex offender online site is that you can see what the sex offender did and how dangerous they are to society. You can see if a woman listed is a prostitute or a child molester. It gives a lot of information.

In California, the best website to check for offenders in your neighborhood is meganslaw.ca.gov - California Megan's Law - California Department of Justice - Office of the Attorney General

Yeah the law is so broad that technically a 19 year old who is dating a 17 year old (and having sexual relations) can be cited as a sex offender. A teenage girl who put naked pictures of herself on myspace has been cited as a sex offender and charged with distribution of child pornogrpahy. What the feck?

I was going to post about the same as you. Of course we all want to protect our kids from harm and I certainly would not want to live in a neighborhood with a TRUE sex offender, but sometimes we make too much out of things. Like you said, a couple are dating, the guy is over 17 and the girl is younger, consentual sex would still be listed as a sex crime. I think it is very important we learn what the crimes are or were, not just the number of offenders in an area.
