You'll be fine..you might get mistaken for one of the Village People though...which might not sit well with you in certain neighborhoods!

Based upon my years of living in San Francisco, I can say that the people are very liberal and open to multiple ideas and points of view as long as they do not interfere with their own.

Michael Savage is native san franciscan and broadcasts his show from SF to tons of conservatives in the area and elsewhere. Despite the stigma, there are still enough Conservatives here in SF, especially out in the southern suburbs, to balance out the libs and keep everything in check...

We was on the air in NM at 9pm. Although he is a little far out there, you are right. The area is not void of conservatives. We have friends in Marin County who are conservative, as well as a few other friends in the area who are not libs.

I am pleasantly surprised at the attitudes of all the San Franciscans who have responded to my OP. It's enough to change my preconceived notions a bit. It's kind of like you're in on the joke. It's like "Yeah, we're San Francisco. Although it can be kind of weird here, most people are normal. Lots of people do their own eccentric things around here anyway, so we're cool about it."

They won't care what you wear but if they find out you like Bush they'll stone you.

I think the best area to walk around in your cowboy duds is in the Castro district. I've seen all kinds of getups in that area. There are regulars walking around dressed in cowboy outfits, Indians too and guys half nekked with leather chaps with their cheeks hanging out. You'll fit right in and no one there will bother you either. That place loves a perpetual carnival.

You really shouldn't worry. Wearing a cowboy hat won't draw any stares, except maybe from other tourists. The village people comment holds true too, lol (on a side note, anyone remember when the police man from the Village People was arrested in the Bay Area a couple years ago, for possessing guns and drugs? haha)

As far as supporting George Bush, some lame people might take personal offense and try and argue you into submission...but honestly, most people-even those who disagree (which is the majority)-won't care much, and won't hold it against you. There are quite a few conservatives here, though obviously they are outnumbered. I'd say actual SF natives would be the most accepting, while those who moved here to be part of the "liberal lifestyle" (whatever that is) would be the most self-righteous and intolerant of other political views.
