Hello. My husband is looking at a job possibility flying out of the Napa airport. We have no children, but are very outdoors-y with dogs.

We would like to find a laid back area that is in driving distance to trails, an easy commute to SF for fun, maybe walking distance to neat shops, restaurants, a lot of character. We are trying to get away from the "packaged" kind of superficial feel of the Atlanta/Buckhead area.

I think it would be a good idea to rent at first but want to stay out of apartment complexes because of the dogs. A townhouse/house would be ideal and our price range would be under $2000/mo.

Safety is also an issue as I will be home alone a lot because he is a pilot. Any suggestions? He would need to live within 1 hr. our Napa.

Sounds like Petaluma may be a good fit for you, eventhough it's in Sonoma County.

You have many options...Sonoma, Glen Ellen, Kenwood, Petaluma, Napa (obviously), Yountville, St. Helena, Calistoga. I would avoid American Canyon, Vallejo, Fairfield, Novato because they are all pretty urban/suburban (although to be fair so are parts of Petaluma and Napa).

Thank you... I have researched Petaluma a bit and read a bit about some of the towns south like Walnut Creek. Any thoughts or comparisons on either?

Walnut Creek is OK but too far away. Stacy from Cali's answer is right on.

I would say research Benicia. It is a fun little town with a great main street (1st st) to walk at with the dogs. There is also a state park in Benicia to walk the dogs. It is also right next to Vallejo and you can catch the ferry to SF with the dogs.

Have you relocated? My husband and I are moving in the spring. Your description of your ideal community sounds like ours down to the dogs.... Where did you choose? Did you make the right decision? We look forward to hearing from you.
