Suburbs of San Francisco and Oakland (Los Angeles, San Jose: city hall, taxes, live in)

I didn't read this thread and I'm sure this was already covered, but Milpitas is along the Peninsula. It is not a suburb of San Jose.

What Peninsula are you referring to? Milpitas lies between Fremont and San Jose, touching San Jose's border. It's definitely a San Jose suburb and its across the water (opposite end of 237) from the Peninsula people call, "The Peninsula." The term mostly refers to San Mateo County, but it can also include Palo Alto, Mountain View and Los Altos. Definitely NOT Milpitas. You could maybe argue that Milpitas is in the East Bay (which would still be wrong) since it borders Fremont, but it is in no way on the Peninsula.

In response to the last post, I was trying to correct a quote from a previous poster...I got side-tracked while at work and accidentally posted the quote without my response (yes, I was farting around on the internet while I'm at work). Anyways, I grew up in Milpitas and it's definitely not on the peninsula! I was going to say that actually, Milpitas for sure is considered to be a suburb of San Jose. When I used to live there, I would always just say I was from San Jose.
I think people from the South Bay, no matter what city they actually live in, just say they're from San Jose. Since the cities around S.J. all pretty much touch each other and blend together in the same valley, it's easier to just say "San Jose". It seems that people from other parts of the Bay Area though just say they're from the Bay Area.
I think that the Bay Area is different from other metro areas in the sense that it's anchored by three major cities. It's not like L.A., where people tend to just say they're from L.A., when in reality they live in the outlying cities. I don't know of anybody who says they live in San Francisco, when they don't actually live in the city limits. In fact, I recently overheard somebody talking on their cell phone in Fremont who was telling the person on the other end that they were still in San Francisco. That right there told me that the person wasn't from around here.
To sum it up, "Bay Area" is most-fitting to define where we're from. Getting caught up over which suburban cities are from which specific metro area around here is pretty much a waste of time and could be debated forever.

I was born and raised in the bay area. Here is the official verdict.
San Fran suburbs= the peninsula(650) this includes Mountain View, and Los Altos
San Jose suburbs=the santa clara valley or otherwise know as Silicon Valley(408)(yes this includes gilroy)
Oakland suburbs= The East Bay(510,925) All of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties
Santa Rosa suburbs= Marin,Sonoma,Napa,Solano counites AKA the North Bay.

Since you're going by area codes, wouldn't Marin fall under SF?

Everything here other than SF is a suburb of SF. Oh, sure, some of them have gotten pretty urbanized. But they all pretty much started out as early burbs, even the inner Bay communities (even Oakland - originally a ferry commuter suburb). SJ is perhaps both a suburb and former exurb. Same deal with Santa Rosa.

I mean, the Peninsula - South Bay commuter rail route started in 1860s. That probably rivals the LIRR in longevity if not actually exceeding it.

Do you realize that "urbanized suburb" is contradicting itself?

But practically speaking, I think most people have a good idea of what are suburbs and what they are suburbs of,
