Has anyone recently successfully or unsuccessfully challenged their Property Value Assessment (ie to lower their property tax) in San Francisco or adjacent areas?

We were planning to file a formal appeal with the City but wanted to get hints and suggestions from people who had tried this previously? Any feedback or advice?

Also is it worth hiring someone to do this for you or is it pretty straightforward? I am willing to pay someone if they have special expertise as the fee is contingent.

any help would be appreciated.

thx

No need to pay anyone. Just contact the tax accessor's office and tell them that you do not agree with their valuation and that it needs to be reassessed. Right now there are a lot of counties that are doing the reassessment before you even contact them.

Good luck, it really isn't a big deal. The only thing is that it will most likely take longer than usual for the assessment.

I've been successful in Alameda County... every time we agreed before the formal hearing to a stipulated value... each time the assessor did a thorough inspection of the property...

Last year I filed an appeal on one property due to market decline... I checked with the Assessor last week and was told they have 2 YEARS to make a determination!!! Meanwhile, I have to pay the amount on the bill... I closed on this home on December 31 2003 and they were automatically reviewing sales back to January 1 2004 just my luck...

Thanks.

Does anyone know the difference between the formal and informal property tax assessment reviews? Would there be a reason to wait to file a formal review instead of an informal review?

We can file the informal review now but would have to wait a few months to file a formal review. Is there any difference?

Just a NOTE that you may get or already received letters from some (SPAM) companies saying if you pay $$ they do your reassessment. This letter looks somewhat genuine but a trick to make money!!!

Doing reassessment is very simple as mentioned above by other posters. I personally did myself and successful in San Mateo County! You are just a call away!!
