Our finances won't permit us to live in the city, so we would like to live north of San Francisco as far up as Mendocino County. I would very much like opinions about good places to live, purchase a home, and possibly raise a family. We need relative affordability, some nature, community, access to excitement every once in a while, and an overall laid-back, liberal environment. Any suggestions?
Hmmm...you do not mention jobs. Is that a consideration? If it is I would try and stay in the Santa Rosa or Marin areas. Of course the further north you go the cheaper housing is but also there are fewer jobs.

Santa Rosa, Windsor, Healdsburg, Sebastopol all could suit your purposes. Naturally in each of those towns there are pockets of rather expensive area so you need to do your homework.

While Laytonville would be a great place I doubt it has changed much from when you were there. It is still just a bump in the road with not much going on there at all. And again if jobs are a concern I wouldn't bother even looking there.

Default Wher is the best place to live for liberal families north of SF

We are seeking information about great places to live, good climate, diverse, cultural, within 30 minutes of Santa Rosa since I want to enroll my kids at the Summerfield Waldorf School. We have elderyt family in Berkeley so a decent commute in terms of traffic would be important since my folks will not be driving for much longer.

If there are great public or private schools that are not full of helicopter type A+ parents that would be great to know as well. One of our kids is Vietnamese so some cultural/racial diversity is important to us and one of our kids has mild special needs so good Sped support is important as well.

We are moving from the East Coast and wondering what people who have relocated to the Bay area have found in terms of the increase in cost of living. Thanks in advance.

If you have a question then please post it in a topic of your own, don't post it in a very old topic like this or you won't get any responses.
