I'm buying a used car from a children's charity in Santa Rosa. It has a California title, smog cert, but the plates are expired Washington State plates. Can I drive it to the DMV to register it, or will I get pulled over?

Also, I'm new to California and still have a Wisconsin drivers license. Can I register my car here if I have an out of state driver's license? HELP!!!

The proper way is to get a trip permit that is good for one trip if you drive or rent a trailer to haul the car... as long as the tires are not on a public street you are not breaking the law...

Having the car towed is a gray area because some tow operators have temp plates and others don't...

If the car was sold through a dealer... the small temporary registration attached to the lower part of the windshield would be valid till your plates arrived...

The problem with driving with expired tags, insurance, etc... is you run the risk of having the car impounded..

How can the car have a CA title and Expired WA plates?

Check the DMV website: Registering a Vehicle From Out-of-State Checklist

The vehicle must be brought to DMV for ID verification.

You should have 72 hour grace period to get to the DMV and register your car. AFAIK, there is no requirement to show your DL to register but I could be wrong.

Here's a link

from what I understood, the car is already a Ca car, so it shouldn't be subject to any out of state car regs, you will just need a smog and the title, a bill of sale helps too.

As Ultrrunner mentioned, if the car has a CA title and Washington plates, something isn't right. I'd make sure the VIN stamped on the car matches the title.

If you do indeed have a CA title, then the plates belong to another vehicle. DON'T DRIVE IT!

Thanks. You guys are right! The Washington plates don't belong with that car. The clown who drove it B4 the charity got it was pulling a fast one. Jeez!

Things were so much simpler in the midwest!
