I recently move to South Berkeley, hence not familiar with the area.

I go to San Francisco occasionally, to hang out and such. If I drive to a BART station (McArthor, Ashby, North Berkley etc) and take BART to the city, which East Bay BART station in the Berkeley/Oakland area is the safest? Esp if I come back to East Bay to my car late at 11pm or later? And my car is kind of an easy target being a convertible.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience!

Car thefts are big in the East Bay. I'll be the first to admit it.

That said, Ive found that people dont really steal nice cars but more buckets.

That's not to say your car wont get broken into. That's not to say that it automatically will either. I think because this is a relatively urban environment, you should excercise street smarts. Don't leave valuables visible to passersby. Get a detachable face stereo. Make sure doors are locked and maybe get a club for the steering wheel-if only to show a potential thief to move on to another car.

That said, I used to park my Mercedes at the Fruitvale BART every weekday for years and never was robbed or had my car stolen.

My favorite late-night BART station to park at is actually Rockridge BART. I feel much more comfortable walking to a car there in the late night hours because the parking lot is better lit and (in most areas) quite visible from the street, where there are generally people out and about until after midnight because of the bars and restaurants in the area. (Be forewarned that it's all but impossible to find a parking spot here on a weekday before 5:30 or so, though, because it's so heavily used by commuters.)

That said, like 18Montclair said, don't leave anything visible in your car (ever, not just at BART---I know people who've had windows smashed in the quietest of upscale neighborhoods!) My friends with convertibles also generally leave their cars unlocked (but with clubs on) to discourage people from slashing the top (if it's a cloth top). Doesn't work if someone's just slashing it for fun, of course, but again---Rockridge BART is a safer spot for that because people walking by can see the cars in the lot, so it takes more guts to try it.

I had my windshield smashed in at the Millbrae station, which is in the wealthiest neighborhood in the whole system. Stuff happens. You may want to park at a station which will have a heavy police presence like MacArthur.

Going all the way to Orinda/Lafayetta will be a bit too far, j/k. Thanks for all the responses. Rockridge sounds good, if there's parking space available.
