i have been looking to move in the bay area for some time now. I checked out daly city which didn't excite me so much, even though rent there is pretty reasonable. A friend told me about forest city and how rent should be lowers. I don't know anything about that town. Is the rent lowers? What about crime rate? Things to do? etc...
what other nearby towns would you recommend to s.f?

Rent in Foster City is low only compared to SF.. it's still fairly expensive. It's a planned waterfront community. Its neighbor, Belmont, has some affordable apartments near Ralston & Alameda.

Foster city is nice but not very exciting either. I'd pick Daly City out of the two simply because of its proximity and ease of access to San Francisco. If you're planning to work/hang out further south then Foster city is a nice place to be.

When I compared foster city rent with san mateo area, FC comes out expensive. Though I never lived in FC but it looks like they have a nice neighbourhood, landscape, school and good recreation facility. (I would rent but will not buy house in FC, that's a different pt.)

If you are motivated by a particular concept of Feng Shui which is popular in the modern era, Foster City appears to meet several of those criteria and some of the nearby communities get minorly dinged. Of course, Foster City is built on landfill. They say it's engineered landfill and not the "bad stuff" like the Marina. We'll see what happens when there is a big shaker on the Hayward Fault directly across the Bay from FC.

Foster City is a planned community meaning it has apartments, condos, townhouses and houses all around the city. It is in the middle of the Peninsula half way to San Jose and half way to San Francisco. It's 20 minutes to the Pacific Ocean and the same to the east bay and Oakland. It is a quiet community with parks everywhere and loads of outdoors activities including waterboarding on the lake. If you are an outdoors person, it's a great place to live. San Mateo sits right next to it, has public transportation (train) and offers more nightlife. Rents are around $1400-$3000 month depending on what and where.

If you like living on landfill it's great.
It's pretty boring. Not any better than Daly City.
