Greetings City-Data folk. I'm about to make the biggest move in my life and I'm looking for a few friendly recommendations. I'm moving from Miami, FL to the Bay Area for an excellent job opportunity. A little nervous about making the cross country move, but equally as excited to live in such an aristocratic part of the country.

I recently graduated law school, passed the CA bar (which was tough as nails), interviewed with a small-medium sized law firm in Pleasanton, and received a job offer. Now, I'm trying to do some research on where to live. A little about me:

-27 yr old single, straight male
-My annual salary will be roughly 110k to start. I would like to keep my rent to ~1600/month.
-I would love to live in SF, as I'm quite the museum and art gallery nerd but I'm not sure that a commute from SF to Pleasanton would make too much sense.
-I'm a fairly liberal person, but definitely not a whacky, coo-coo liberal.
-I like to go to nice bars and lounges, not too much into the club scene.

After doing some research, it seems that Emeryville would fit the bill. I've also heard good things about Oakland (along with a few 'not-so-good' things). I would like to keep my commute to under 30 minutes. Any other recommendations? Also, anyone want to give me a 'heads up' concerning stuff a transplant should know. Thanks all.

I'd also check out Downtown Walnut Creek area, shorter commute to Pleasanton and plenty of nice amenities.

I lived in Pleasanton for 2 1/2 years and my advice would be to actually live in Pleasanton and take the BART into the city when you want to have fun. Pleasanton has some really nice apartments (I can recommend some for you if you'd like or provide information about the East Bay in general - I moved from the Midwest) within your range and you're still within a reasonable distance from the fun stuff in the city. Shoot me a PM if you'd like more info (and congrats on passing the bar!)

If I were in your shoes I would live in Rockridge.

I agree, from your post I think you would be bored to tears on the other side of the caldecott (Walnut Creek etc), it's more for families. Rockridge is a great neighborhood here in Oakland. Just so you know Oakland is really no worse crime wise than Miami, both my parents are from there so I know how bad it is.

Default Hi there,

Congrats on passing the CA bar.
I recommend Pleasanton, just because it is considered a very nice place to live and bart will take you directly to the city. But even better, if you prefer some extra nightlife, would be walnut creek. There's a good amount of restaurants and lounges and is not as suburban as most east bay cities tend to be. I will definitely look into Oakland. Seems that you can have great views of the SF skyline from parts of Oakland. Easy commute to Pleasanton and easy to get into SF on the weekends.

CityBoy, I hear you on the Miami thing. I have a feeling that Miami and Oakland are pretty similar. Some parts are rough and tough, while others are tightknit communities.
