What are some areas in the bay area that have relatively cheap houses for sale with a short commute to San Francisco? By cheap i mean 250-300k that buys you a descent 3bd 2bath home..

thanks

I don't believe there is anywhere that meets those criteria, unless you can find a deal on a repo home, perhaps. But that still is mighty low for any neighborhood with a short commute to SF.

You won't find a DECENT 3bd, 2ba home a short commute away for your budget. I don't know if you'd even find a 3bd, 2ba run down piece of _____ a short commute away with that budget.

I'm just being honest, you shouldn't move here with unrealistic expectations.

Concord, El Sobrante, Pinole, some parts of Oakland & Richmond (but safety is an issue). Oakland would be the shortest commute and the other areas would be around 30-45 minutes. Your range like others have mentioned is a bit low for the bay especially if you want something nice. You might consider a condo also, why buy now?? What is the rush? You might not even like where you live if you have never been here before. Also, if you wait you would be in your desired price range.

This looks good and is in a nice area, but it's a condo..

Nice place in North & East Richmond which is safe.. there are a couple places you can get in the East Richmond hills and El Sobrante as well.

San Jose is actually a pretty good option. This condo is in the Moreland school district, and it's close to 280 for a tolerable if not great commute:

Good schools here as well, hellish commute:
